Police in Odisha’s Ganjam district have arrested a man for allegedly conducting a delivery without a medical degree, leading to the deaths of a woman and her newborn.
The accused, Mangulu Charan Pradhan, 35, is the proprietor of a local nursing home.
According to police, the incident took place on May 11 at Pradhan’s nursing home. Roji Nayak, who was in labor, was admitted to the facility after her family was assured of a safe delivery by the nursing home staff. However, the delivery was performed by Pradhan and two Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) without a qualified doctor present.
The newborn was pronounced dead shortly after birth, and Nayak died while being transported to MKCG Medical College and Hospital.
Following a complaint by the deceased woman’s husband, Babu Nayak, police arrested Pradhan from his village on Sunday. The two ANMs, Madhusmita Pattanayak and Pramodini Gamango, who were also involved in the incident, were previously arrested on May 19 and August 10, respectively.
