Two individuals, including the ex-boyfriend of a nursing student, have been arrested in connection with the alleged harassment and leaking of intimate photographs that led the victim to attempt suicide.
The accused have been identified as Uddharba Gadanayak, the victim’s former partner, and Satyajit Sarkar, the main accused in the circulation of the images. Uddharba was apprehended from Jeypore, while Satyajit was arrested from a moving bus in Daspalla, Nayagarh district, through mobile tracking.
The victim, a B.Sc. Nursing student residing in a hostel in Jeypore, consumed poison on July 17 after private images were widely circulated on social media. She remains in critical condition, with severe damage to her liver, kidneys, and brain. After treatment in Umerkote and Raipur, she was taken home due to her deteriorating health.
The sequence of events began on July 13, when Satyajit allegedly assaulted the girl in public at the Jeypore market. Though initially reported to the police, the matter was settled informally. On July 15, the student filed a formal complaint after returning home. A few days later, the photos surfaced online, allegedly shared by Uddharba with Satyajit, who then posted them.
Following a fresh complaint by the girl’s grandfather on July 23, police recorded her statement and launched an intensified investigation. A special team formed by Nabarangpur Police conducted coordinated raids across districts leading to both arrests.
Both accused face charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Information Technology Act. The investigation is ongoing.
