U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that his administration used trade negotiations as leverage to encourage India and Pakistan to end hostilities, which he suggested could have escalated into a nuclear conflict.

During a press conference at the White House, Trump stated that he persuaded both nations to cease military engagement by offering trade incentives. The conflict, which began following a terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22, led to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan. The attack, carried out by a Pakistan-linked group, resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists.

Trump announced the ceasefire on May 10, commending the leadership of both nations for showing “wisdom and fortitude” in resolving the situation. However, no specific details were provided on how trade discussions influenced the conflict resolution.

Although Trump emphasised his role in preventing a nuclear war, there was no evidence suggesting India and Pakistan were on the verge of deploying nuclear weapons. In his speech, he reiterated that his administration helped broker “a full and immediate ceasefire” between the neighbouring countries, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement.

India and the U.S. have been discussing a bilateral trade agreement, with both sides expressing optimism for an early resolution. Trump indicated that future negotiations with India and Pakistan would continue, potentially strengthening economic ties.

While Trump’s claims have sparked debate, analysts are awaiting further details on the diplomatic strategies employed to reach the ceasefire agreement.
