Tension flared in Kharipalli village under Dharakote block of Odisha’s Ganjam district after a violent clash over allegations of witchcraft left three people dead and three critically injured on Sunday night.
According to reports, the violence erupted when a group of villagers confronted Khadal Behera and his son Ratnakar Behera, accusing them of practicing sorcery. The confrontation quickly escalated, turning into a brutal attack.
Fatalities and Ongoing Probe
Both Khadal Behera and Ratnakar Behera were beaten to death in the assault. Another villager, Ramesh Behera, was also killed during the retaliation. Three others sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the hospital as police arrived at the scene.
The village remains on edge, with police detaining around ten people for interrogation. A forensic team is expected to examine the scene. Authorities have not released further statements on the incident.
Rising Violence Over Witchcraft Allegations
This attack mirrors a similar incident in Bolangir district earlier this month, where a man was killed and several injured during a violent clash over witchcraft accusations in Atgaon village under Tusura police limits.
Incidents linked to superstitions and witchcraft continue to challenge law enforcement in parts of Odisha, prompting calls for stronger awareness and intervention efforts.
