Bengaluru: Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal, seeded second, ousted the fifth seed Adam Walton of Australia in the quarter-finals of the Bengaluru Open 2024 singles event at the KSLTA Stadium on Friday.
Nagal, who broke into the world top 100 after a title triumph in Chennai last week, was tested by Walton, world No. 153 in tennis rankings in the opening set but kept his composure under pressure to register a 7-5, 6-2 win.
A Bengaluru Open champion from 2017, Nagal will face seventh-seed Stephano Napolitano of Italy in the semi-finals.
The 26-year-old Nagal, currently India’s top-ranked player in the ATP rankings at world No. 98, has now won eight consecutive matches, all in straight sets.
“Great, great fight for me,” Nagal said. “It was a really tight first set, but I felt like the longer I played the match it went better but hats off to Adam for playing such a high-level match.
“Tennis is all about small margins, you know, and I felt like I played those margins very well today,” the Indian added. “I went for my shot and I was the one who was dictating the points.”
