Steve Smith, one of Australia’s most celebrated cricketers, announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following Australia’s semi-final loss to India in the Champions Trophy 2025.
In a thrilling encounter at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Australia posted a target of 265 runs, thanks to Smith’s commendable inning of 73 runs off 96 balls. However, the Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma, chased down the target with 11 balls to spare, securing their spot in the final with a four-wicket victory.
Reflecting on his illustrious career, Smith expressed his gratitude for the opportunities he had, including winning two World Cups for Australia – the 2015 ODI World Cup and the 2021 Men’s T20 World Cup. “It has been a great ride, and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a press release. “Winning two World Cups was a great highlight, along with the many fantastic teammates who shared the journey.”
Smith emphasized the importance of allowing new players to prepare for the 2027 World Cup, stating, “Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup, so it feels like the right time to make way.” He also reiterated his commitment to Test cricket, looking forward to the upcoming World Test Championship Final, a series against the West Indies, and a home series against England.
Steve Smith’s retirement marks the end of an era for Australian cricket, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable achievements and unforgettable moments.
