The city of Puri is preparing for the revered Snana Purnima ritual on June 11, a significant prelude to the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath, scheduled for June 27.

To ensure a seamless and secure experience for devotees, authorities have announced the deployment of 70 platoons of police personnel, four senior commandant-rank officers, and 450 additional officers. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) S. Pravin Kumar emphasised that the primary objectives are to maintain discipline during the darshan of Lord Jagannath, his elder brother Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra, ensure the safety of devotees, and regulate traffic effectively.

The Snana Purnima, or the grand bathing ritual, marks a key event in the annual calendar of the Jagannath Temple, where the deities are bathed in 108 pitchers of water in a ceremonial display of devotion. This ritual sets the stage for the Rath Yatra, during which the deities are paraded through the streets of Puri on grand chariots. To finalise security arrangements, DIG Kumar met with Puri Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal and other senior district officials earlier today, focusing on crowd management and safety protocols.

In addition to security measures, the temple administration has been proactive in ensuring the timely observance of rituals. Multiple meetings with temple servitors and the Daitas, a key group of hereditary servitors responsible for major rituals, have been held to streamline the proceedings. The administration’s efforts aim to uphold the sanctity and punctuality of the rituals, which draw thousands of devotees from across India and beyond.

In a significant move, the Odisha state government has announced a financial incentive of Rs. 2.25 crore for the Daitas, contingent on the smooth execution of rituals from Snana Purnima through key events like the Pahandi, Rath Yatra, Bahuda Yatra (return car festival), Suna Besha, and Niladri Bije. The Law Department has formally communicated this incentive plan to the chief administrator of the Sri Jagannath Temple, underscoring the government’s commitment to supporting the temple’s traditions.

As Puri prepares for these sacred events, the city is poised to balance tradition with order, ensuring that devotees can participate in the rituals safely and reverently.

The combination of enhanced security and financial incentives reflects the state’s dedication to preserving the cultural and spiritual significance of Snan Purnima and the Rath Yatra, while addressing the concerns of all stakeholders remains a key challenge.
