Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has been discharged from a Sydney hospital after suffering a blunt abdominal injury during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued its third official medical update, confirming that Shreyas is now stable and recovering well.
BCCI Confirms Successful Treatment and Recovery Progress
The BCCI stated that Shreyas underwent a minor medical procedure to address internal bleeding caused by a laceration to his spleen. Following the successful intervention, his condition has improved significantly.
“He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today,” read the official BCCI release.
The board also extended gratitude to Dr Kouroush Haghigi and his medical team in Sydney, along with Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for their expert care and coordination.
Shreyas to Stay in Sydney for Follow-Up Care
Although discharged, Shreyas will remain in Sydney for follow-up consultations with specialists. He will return to India only after doctors confirm he is fit to fly.
The Injury Incident
The 30-year-old batter sustained the injury while taking a diving catch off Harshit Rana’s bowling to dismiss Alex Carey. Upon landing, Shreyas was visibly in pain, prompting immediate medical attention. After an on-field assessment, he was taken for scans, which revealed the extent of the internal injury.
The situation worsened a day later, and he was briefly moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for close monitoring.
Shreyas Iyer’s Message to Fans
Earlier this week, Shreyas shared a heartfelt update on Instagram, thanking fans for their continued support.
“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful for all the wishes and support I’ve received – it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts,” he wrote.
Expected Return and Upcoming Series
Reports suggest that Shreyas will likely be out of action for around two months, which means he could miss the upcoming India vs South Africa ODI series, starting November 30 in Ranchi.
Before his injury, Shreyas had been appointed as the vice-captain for the ODI series against Australia, marking a significant milestone in his career.
