At just 29, writer-director Rohan Apte has developed a unique cinematic style that combines fantasy, horror, and subtle social commentary.

Known for his earlier short Maya, where a magical drink drives destinies and behaviors, Apte continues to explore complex narratives that transcend conventional horror.

Speaking about his approach, Apte said, “More than horror, I think it is a fascination for other worlds and objects that represent emotions and histories.”

Varas: Horror Meets Social Commentary

Apte’s latest short film, Varas, delves into generational patriarchy and societal structures while maintaining a strong horror and fantasy aesthetic. The film examines how cultural and emotional histories shape individual behaviors, using supernatural elements as a lens to explore human relationships and social norms.

The technical finesse of Varas demonstrates Apte’s commitment to storytelling that is visually compelling and thematically layered, appealing to both genre enthusiasts and thoughtful cinema audiences.

India Premiere at Wench Film Festival

Varas will have its India premiere at the Wench Film Festival on February 28. The festival is recognized as a leading platform for horror and genre films in India, offering filmmakers an opportunity to showcase innovative and experimental storytelling.

With Varas, Apte continues to carve a niche in Indian short films that merge fantasy, horror, and social relevance, solidifying his reputation as a promising voice in contemporary cinema.
