At least 20 people were injured when a car drove into a crowd in Munich on Thursday, according to police.
This incident occurred as the southern German city prepared for a significant security conference, which will be attended by U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
The Bild newspaper reported that police are investigating whether the driver of the Mini Cooper intentionally drove into the crowd or mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
Authorities stated on X that they have detained the driver but do not consider him to be a further threat. However, they have declined to comment on whether the incident was an accident. A spokesperson for the Munich police noted, “At least 20 people were injured, some seriously and critically.”
The Munich Security Conference is set to begin on Friday, with senior officials, including Vance and Zelenskiy, arriving later on Thursday. A large-scale police operation is currently underway near the city’s central train station.
