Sambalpur police have arrested seven individuals involved in a violent robbery that left a man injured and looted of cash and valuables. The accused—Riku Ghasi (22), Ranjit Parekh (22), Prakash Rana (19), Hadu Sandha (21), Surendra Dila (19), Tapan Kumar Sandha (27), and Babuli Bhai (25)—are all residents of Gumakarama Kumbharpada.
The incident occurred on August 29 around 10:15 PM when Shayan Ranabida (30) of Rengalpali village in Kolabira block, Jharsuguda district, was returning home on his bike. He was intercepted on the Gumkarma-Ghichamura road by a group of 6–7 miscreants who demanded Rs 15,000. Upon his refusal, they snatched Rs 2,200 in cash and a mobile phone, and forced him to transfer more money via UPI.
When Shayan failed to comply, the attackers brutally assaulted him, causing serious injuries to his head and back. He was treated at Kolabira CHC and later filed a written complaint at Thelkoli police station.
Based on the complaint, police first arrested Surendra Dila and Tapan Sandha, followed by the remaining five. All seven have been forwarded to court. The case has raised concerns over rising incidents of roadside crime in the region.
