Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi has been suspended from the Maharashtra Assembly for the entire session following his controversial remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
Azmi’s comments, made during a discussion on the historical portrayal in the movie Chhava, ignited a political firestorm and led to his suspension.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandrakant Patil moved the proposal to suspend Azmi, while BJP MLA Sudhir Mungantiwar called for his permanent suspension from the Assembly. Mungantiwar emphasized the importance of respecting historical figures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, stating, “We can’t let go of those who insult him so easily.”
Azmi, who represents Mankhurd Shivaji Nagar, criticized the film Chhava and described Aurangzeb as a “good administrator.” He highlighted that during Aurangzeb’s reign, India’s borders extended to Afghanistan and Burma, and the country’s economy accounted for 24% of the global GDP. Azmi’s remarks, however, were met with widespread condemnation, prompting Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to demand his suspension.
In an attempt to quell the uproar, Azmi withdrew his controversial remarks and claimed that his words were misinterpreted. Despite his retraction, an FIR was lodged against Azmi for allegedly attempting to hurt religious sentiments. The matter has since been transferred to Mumbai.
The incident has sparked a heated debate within the political landscape, with both supporters and critics voicing their opinions on the matter. As the controversy continues to unfold, Azmi’s suspension serves as a reminder of the sensitivity surrounding historical narratives in India.
