Telangana chief minister Revanth Reddy has triggered a political storm after making lighthearted remarks about the diversity of deities in Hinduism during a Congress executive meeting in Hyderabad. His comments, which surfaced through videos shared online, have drawn sharp criticism from the BJP and the RSS, who allege that the statement hurts Hindu sentiments.
Speaking at the meeting, Reddy remarked that Hinduism has “a God for every occasion,” and referenced different deities worshipped across communities. He later clarified that his comments were made “in a lighter vein.”
Opposition Reacts Strongly
The remarks prompted immediate backlash from opposition parties. BJP leaders accused the chief minister and the Congress party of showing disrespect toward Hindu beliefs.
Union minister and former Telangana BJP chief Bandi Sanjay Kumar condemned the comments on social media, alleging that they reflect a dismissive attitude toward Hindu traditions. He claimed that such statements expose what he described as a long-standing ideological bias within the Congress.
The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) also criticised the chief minister’s remarks and demanded that he withdraw the statement. Several BRS leaders urged him to offer a public apology, stating that the comments had hurt religious sentiments.
Protests Likely
Political tensions in the state may escalate further, as the Telangana BJP unit has called for statewide protests. BJP state chief G Ramchandra Rao has demanded an unconditional apology from the chief minister.
As reactions continue to pour in, the controversy is expected to remain a focal point of Telangana’s political discourse in the coming days.
