IAS officer Tina Dabi, currently serving as the District Collector of Barmer, has found her Instagram account flooded with comments calling her a “Reel star” after college students alleged they were detained following a protest over an examination fee hike.
The controversy stems from a student demonstration held on Saturday outside Multanmal Bhikhchand Chhajed Women’s College, where students were protesting an increase in exam fees and demanding a meeting with the district administration.
What Led to the Controversy?
According to media reports, the protesting students blocked a road during the sit-in while seeking an audience with the district collector. Police later took two students to the Kotwali police station, citing concerns related to traffic disruption and public order.
Some student groups subsequently claimed that the students were “arrested” for referring to the IAS officer as a “Reel star” — a remark that later gained traction on social media.
However, Tina Dabi has firmly denied these allegations, stating that no student was arrested or formally detained.
‘Reel Star’ Remark Sparks Dispute
The situation escalated after an official described Dabi as a role model for students, a claim contested by some protesters, including members linked to the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
According to reports, students said the district collector prioritised social media visibility over engaging with student concerns. One protester was quoted as saying that while the administration was active online, it was not responsive on the ground.
Tina Dabi Responds
In a written statement to the media, Tina Dabi clarified that the students were only taken to the police station briefly to de-escalate the situation.
“No one was arrested or detained. Despite the fee issue having been resolved, some students continued to block the road and create disruption. They were taken for discussion and allowed to leave after a couple of hours,” she stated.
She further added that the controversy had been amplified online and accused some individuals of spreading misinformation for publicity.
Social Media Reaction
Following the incident, Dabi’s Instagram comment section has seen a surge of critical remarks, with many users repeatedly posting the phrase “Reel star.”
The IAS officer, who has over 1.5 million followers, has not posted on Instagram since 2023. Her last post has since attracted thousands of new comments, many referencing the ongoing controversy.
