Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) found itself at the center of a massive backlash on Wednesday after sharing a celebratory video of their team bus being welcomed by cheering fans — just hours after a stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium killed 11 people and left several others injured.

The now-deleted post, which featured the caption “This welcome is what pure love looks like,” was met with fierce criticism online for being tone-deaf and insensitive in light of the tragedy. Facing growing outrage, the franchise removed the tweet within hours.

In response to the public outcry and media reports, RCB issued a statement expressing deep sorrow and regret over the incident:

“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon.

The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us. RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extends heartfelt condolences to the affected families.

Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program and followed the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe.”

The franchise emphasized that the events were unfolding in real-time, and they responded by modifying their celebratory plans as soon as they learned about the disaster.

The incident has intensified scrutiny on RCB’s management and the urgency with which public celebrations were held, barely four hours after the team returned from the IPL final. Critics argue that better coordination with local authorities and a more measured response could have prevented such a tragedy.

As investigations continue and families mourn their loved ones, the celebration of RCB’s historic first IPL title has now been overshadowed by grief and questions of accountability.
