In a devastating incident, three individuals from Baghadharia village in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district were killed in a wild elephant attack earlier today, sparking outrage and protests in the region.
The victims, who were using the forest for sanitation purposes, were trampled to death, highlighting the escalating human-wildlife conflict in the area. A large group of villagers, predominantly women, staged a sit-in protest, demanding immediate action from the authorities.
The Odisha state government has responded swiftly, suspending Hindol Ranger Goutam Pradhan following a detailed report by the Regional Conservator of Forests (RCCF) of the Satkosia Tiger Reserve. The report pointed to lapses in wildlife management, prompting the suspension as a measure of accountability.
The deceased were identified as Jhulana Dehuri, Karunakar Dehuri, and Sashi Sahu. Following the incident, locals staged a road blockade near Satamile Chhak demanding justice and safety.
Forest Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia announced financial compensation and suspended negligent forest officials. DFO Dhenkanal initiated disciplinary action against Rasol Forester and Forest Guard.
The incident has reignited debates on the effectiveness of current conservation strategies, with local communities calling for better safety protocols and relocation support.
Wildlife officials confirmed the rogue elephant retreated into the nearby forest but remains under watch. Authorities have deployed rapid response teams to the area, while investigations into the incident continue.
