Rajinikanth’s Coolie has once again proven the superstar’s unmatched appeal, crossing Rs 250 crore worldwide just two days after release, and securing its spot as the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2025.
The film, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, capitalised on the Independence Day holiday to deliver a strong performance at the box office.
Despite the usual day-two dip seen in South films due to opening-day fan rush, Coolie managed to limit the drop to just 17%, earning Rs 118.50 crore net (Rs 145 crore gross) in India over two days. Overseas, the film has been equally successful, grossing $8.75 million on day 1—the highest ever for a Tamil film—and surpassing $13 million (Rs 110 crore) in two days, taking its worldwide total past Rs 250 crore.
The film’s success puts Rajinikanth ahead of rivals Ajith Kumar and Suriya, surpassing the lifetime collections of Ajith’s Vidaamuyarchi (Rs 138 crore) and Good Bad Ugly (Rs 248 crore), as well as other Tamil hits like Dragon (Rs 150 crore). Analysts predict that if Coolie sustains this momentum over the weekend, it could reach Rs 400 crore in its opening weekend and challenge Rajinikanth’s own record of Rs 691 crore set by 2.0.
Coolie stars Rajinikanth in the lead role and features a large ensemble cast, including Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Soubin Shahir, Upendra, and a cameo by Aamir Khan.
