In a major push to enhance marine tourism and elevate Puri’s global appeal, the Odisha government has announced plans to establish a world-class marine aquarium and underwater zoo near the city’s iconic beach.
The initiative, led by the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (F&ARD) Department, aims to offer visitors an immersive marine experience while promoting conservation and education.
The proposed facility will be developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The selected private entity will be responsible for designing, building, owning, and operating the aquarium as a commercial venture. In return, the state government will provide land at a subsidized rate and may offer viability gap funding to support capital expenditure.
The aquarium is envisioned as a landmark attraction that complements Puri’s spiritual and coastal identity, especially its proximity to the revered Shree Jagannath Temple. It will feature international-standard exhibits, adhere to environmental and statutory norms, and target both domestic and international tourists.
Interested firms have been invited to submit proposals by October 10, with evaluations beginning October 20. The final selection is expected to be announced by October 30.
