The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Puri, has launched a significant initiative to inscribe the iconic Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival, in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The 12th-century Jagannath Temple is home to this revered festival, which showcases the rich cultural heritage of India. The inscription would not only acknowledge the festival’s cultural significance but also promote its global recognition.
“We are proud to initiate this process, which will highlight the importance of Rath Yatra as a symbol of India’s diverse cultural heritage,” said Arabinda Kumar Padhee, Chief Administrator, SJTA Puri.
The inscription process involves meticulous documentation of the festival’s cultural significance, traditions, and practices. SJTA Puri will collaborate closely with the Ministry of Culture, the Government of India, and other stakeholders to prepare the nomination dossier.
The nine-day Rath Yatra festival attracts millions of devotees and tourists from around the world. Its inscription in UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity would further enhance its global appeal and promote cultural exchange.
