Australia announced a youthful yet balanced Prime Minister’s XI squad for the upcoming two-day pink-ball match against England at Manuka Oval, Canberra, from November 29 to 30.
Test opener Sam Konstas will attract the most attention as selectors aim to blend emerging talent with seasoned campaigners. Meanwhile, Peter Handscomb, who last played Test cricket in 2023, will captain the side. In addition, veteran fast bowler Peter Siddle, with 67 Tests to his name, strengthens the squad with valuable experience. Former Australia captain Tim Paine will guide the team as coach.
Konstas, only 20, missed out on selection for the first Ashes Test after a difficult Caribbean tour earlier this year. Nevertheless, he now joins fellow Under-19 World Cup winners Charlie Anderson, Oliver Peake, and Hugh Weibgen, forming the youthful core of the squad.
Furthermore, the fixture serves as crucial preparation for Ben Stokes’ England ahead of the day-night second Test at the Gabba. At the same time, it provides Australia’s emerging players with an opportunity to stake their claim, especially as renewal in the senior Test side feels inevitable.
Chairman of selectors George Bailey highlighted the squad’s balance. He stated, “We’ve selected a squad that strikes a balance between youth, experience, and opportunity. It’s a chance to build depth, reward performance, and provide valuable exposure against international competition.”
Ultimately, the clash promises to test England’s readiness while offering Australia’s next generation a platform to shine.
