President Droupadi Murmu on Saturday paid floral tributes to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary at his memorial, Sadaiv Atal, in the national capital.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid homage to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on his death anniversary, hailing his spirit of service towards the nation and his vision for a self-reliant India.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote: “Remembering Atal Ji on his Punya Tithi. His dedication and spirit of service towards the all-round progress of India continue to inspire everyone in building a developed and self-reliant India.”
PM Modi later visited Sadaiv Atal, Vajpayee’s memorial in Delhi, where he paid floral tributes to the former PM.
Union ministers Kiren Rijiju, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and JD (U) MP Sanjay Jha were also present at the memorial.
President Murmu placed a floral wreath at the memorial and observed a moment of silence in remembrance of Vajpayee, who passed away on August 16, 2018. Known for his statesmanship, oratory, and ability to build consensus across political lines, Vajpayee served as Prime Minister three times and was one of the founding members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
In her tribute, President Murmu described Vajpayee as “a visionary leader who combined politics with poetry, governance with compassion, and nationalism with humanism.” She added that his contributions to strengthening democracy, ushering in economic reforms, and enhancing India’s global stature “will inspire generations to come.”
Prime Minister Modi, recalling Vajpayee’s legacy, said, “Atal Ji’s life was dedicated to the service of the nation. His dream of a strong and prosperous India continues to guide us in every step we take.”
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a recipient of the Bharat Ratna, remains one of India’s most respected leaders. His memorial, Sadaiv Atal, located near the Rajghat complex, has become a site of national homage since his passing.
