Political Tensions Halt India’s Tour to Bangladesh

The eagerly awaited India-Bangladesh white-ball series, scheduled for August 17–31, 2025, is now likely to be indefinitely postponed amid escalating political unrest in Bangladesh.


Security concerns following the reported collapse of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government have triggered a diplomatic chill, leading Indian cricket authorities to reconsider sending players across the border.

The series, comprising three ODIs and three T20Is, was supposed to kick off in Dhaka. However, as tensions mount, Indian broadcasters have reportedly been told the matches won’t take place as planned. Adding to the uncertainty, no Invitation to Tender (ITT) has been issued for media rights, a procedural necessity that would normally precede such a bilateral tour.

Reports from cricket insiders suggest the tour is “effectively off,” though formal confirmation is still awaited from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). The BCB has already halted its media rights auction for the tour, initially scheduled for July 7 and 10.

This development comes as a setback for star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were eyeing a return to international action during this tour. The pair may now turn their focus toward the upcoming Asia Cup, slated for September.

While the BCB remains optimistic about rescheduling the series, the unfolding political situation remains a major hurdle. For now, cricket takes a back seat as regional diplomacy and internal stability dominate headlines.
