New Delhi: National Police Commemoration Day is observed every year on 21st October, across India.
On 21st October 1959, 20 Indian soldiers were attacked by the Chinese troops in Ladakh, while the altercation between the troops claimed the lives of ten policemen. Seven other troops who were imprisoned managed to escape from the Chinese troops.
On 28th November 1959, the Chinese troops handed over the dead bodies of the martyred troops to India, while their cremation was held with full dignity and Police honors at the Hot springs in Ladakh. And since then, October 21 is celebrated as National Police Commemoration Day.
The day is observed to pay tribute and immense respect to the security personnel who risk their precious lives while discharging their duties for the nation.
