Tension flared in Biripalli village under Bangomunda police limits of Bolangir district after police attempted to rescue a young couple who had recently eloped.
According to reports, the boy and girl from the same village had fled from their homes a few days ago, following which their families lodged written complaints at the local police station. Acting on a tip-off, Bangomunda police traced the couple’s whereabouts and went to rescue them today.
However, during the rescue attempt, villagers confronted the police, leading to a scuffle. Allegations have surfaced that villagers attacked the police while resisting the operation.
A case has been registered at Bangomunda police station for assault on police personnel. Sources said some villagers have been detained for questioning as investigation is underway.
