Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 72nd National Volleyball Tournament in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, via video conferencing today.
As the Member of Parliament from Varanasi, he expressed happiness in welcoming and congratulating all the players.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted that the National Volleyball Championship is commencing in Varanasi with teams from 28 states, presenting a vibrant picture of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat. He praised the athletes for their immense hard work and noted that their efforts will be tested on the grounds of Varanasi in the coming days.
Recalling a local Banarasi saying, Shri Modi observed that the players have now arrived in Varanasi and will also come to know the city. Moreover, he emphasised that Varanasi is a city of sports lovers, where wrestling, boxing, boat races, and kabaddi enjoy immense popularity. He remarked that institutions like Banaras Hindu University, UP College, and Kashi Vidyapeeth have produced many national-level players.
In addition, Shri Modi highlighted Varanasi’s centuries-old tradition of welcoming seekers of knowledge and art. He expressed confidence that the championship will witness enthusiastic audiences, strong hospitality, and high energy throughout.
The Prime Minister also noted that Varanasi’s pleasant cold weather and seasonal delicacies, such as malaiyyo, add charm to the city. He urged participants to experience Baba Vishwanath’s temple, boating in the Ganga, and the city’s rich heritage.
Finally, Shri Modi encouraged the players to perform well, expressing hope that every spike, block, and point from Varanasi’s soil will elevate India’s sporting aspirations.
Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Shri Yogi Adityanath, joined other dignitaries at the event.
