Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his latest Mann Ki Baat address, paid tribute to the heroes who stood by the Constitution during the Emergency of 1975—a period he described as a “dark chapter in Indian democracy.”
Marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, Modi underscored its historical significance, stating, “It was a time when democracy was strangled and voices were silenced. The courage of those who stood firm in defence of constitutional values remains etched in the nation’s conscience.”
The Prime Minister used the moment to reflect on India’s evolution over the decades. He emphasised the collective strides made in governance, infrastructure, technology, and social empowerment. “Today, India is not just the world’s largest democracy in name, but also in spirit,” he noted.
Throughout the address, Modi encouraged citizens to remain vigilant in preserving democratic ideals and to draw lessons from history. His message also celebrated the spirit of resilience, urging young Indians to value freedom and contribute to the nation’s progress.
The address concluded with tributes to citizens from all walks of life who continue to strengthen India’s democratic fabric through everyday acts of service and integrity.
