Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in London on Thursday for a crucial two-day visit focused on advancing the India-UK economic partnership through the signing of a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
Modi was welcomed at the airport by UK Foreign Office Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West, along with Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami and British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron.
Speaking on his arrival, PM Modi stated, “This visit will focus on boosting prosperity, growth, and job creation. A strong India-UK friendship is essential for global progress.”
The centrepiece of the visit will be the formal signing of the India-UK Free Trade Agreement, finalised on May 6, which promises significant benefits for both economies. Commerce Ministers Piyush Goyal (India) and Jonathan Reynolds (UK) are expected to sign the agreement.
Key Highlights of the FTA:
-
99% of Indian exports to the UK will benefit from tariff elimination or reduction
-
Easier market access for British exports including whisky, automobiles, and other goods
-
Strengthened cooperation in technology, defence, health, climate, and education
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who will host PM Modi at Chequers, praised the agreement as a “major win for Britain.”
During his stay, PM Modi is also scheduled to meet King Charles III before proceeding to the Maldives on July 25-26.
Diaspora Welcome
The Prime Minister received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora, including members of the Dawoodi Bohra community. Several attendees expressed joy and admiration after brief interactions with him.
“He shook my hand and gave me ‘Ashirwad’. It was the best feeling ever,” said Bhavya, a community member.
The visit also marks a review of the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), with discussions expected to cover a broad range of sectors.
