Katra, the base camp for pilgrims heading to the Vaishno Devi shrine, is currently experiencing a 72-hour shutdown starting Wednesday in protest of a proposed ropeway project.
Local residents, including traders, shopkeepers, pony operators, and labourers, are against the initiative, expressing concerns that it would threaten their livelihoods.
The shutdown has caused significant inconvenience for pilgrims, with shops and other businesses closed. The action has been organized by the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti, which is leading the opposition to the ropeway project.
This proposed ₹250-crore ropeway is intended to connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, leading to the cave shrine in the Reasi district. The Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board argues that the construction of the ropeway would improve access to the temple for the elderly and others in need.
However, leaders of the Sangarsh Samiti claim that the project would take away local livelihoods and negatively affect the town’s economy. They also argue that it would harm religious sentiments and lead to greater ecological vulnerability. Following unsuccessful discussions with the Deputy Commissioner of Reasi, the Samiti initiated the shutdown.
In Katra town, Samiti leaders and traders conducted a peaceful march, which resulted in several arrests. Former legislator Jugal Sharma condemned the police response, calling it excessive and fueling public anger. He indicated that the shutdown is unlikely to end soon and might be extended until their demands are addressed.
Pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine have reported numerous challenges due to the shutdown. One pilgrim from Delhi, Sayem, expressed frustration about the situation, stating, “I came from Delhi to pay my respects at the shrine, but we’re struggling as all the markets are closed. Hotels are unavailable, local transport is nonexistent, and even simple necessities like drinking water are hard to come by.” Sharma noted that as the situation stands, an extension of the shutdown is likely until the local concerns are satisfied.
