A passenger bus carrying 34 people crashed on Indonesia’s main island of Java, killing at least 16 passengers shortly after midnight on Monday.
The bus lost control on a toll road, struck a concrete barrier, and overturned onto its side, according to Budiono, chief of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.
The inter-provincial bus travelled from Jakarta to Yogyakarta. However, the accident occurred on a curved exit ramp at the Krapyak toll road in Semarang, Central Java. Budiono explained that the strong impact threw several passengers and trapped others against the bus body.
Soon after, police and rescue teams reached the site about 40 minutes later. They discovered six passengers dead at the scene. Meanwhile, another 10 victims died during transport or treatment.
Furthermore, rescue workers moved 18 injured passengers to nearby hospitals. Of them, five remained in critical condition while 13 suffered serious injuries.
In addition, television footage showed the yellow bus lying on its side as rescue workers, police officers, and bystanders gathered. Ambulances transported both injured passengers and bodies away from the crash site.
Ultimately, the tragedy underscored the dangers of toll road travel and highlighted the urgent need for stronger road safety measures in Indonesia.
