The Lok Sabha is set to hold a marathon 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s military response to the Pahalgam terror attack, during the Monsoon Session on Monday, July 28. The Rajya Sabha will take up the discussion for an equal duration on Tuesday.
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed that the Business Advisory Committee has prioritized the Operation Sindoor debate, following demands from the Opposition, including the Congress, which had sought its immediate inclusion in the Parliament agenda before the session began.
Key Highlights of the Debate:
-
The discussion in Lok Sabha will be led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, with participation expected from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey.
-
The Opposition is likely to raise questions regarding US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, a recurring point of contention.
-
Leaders from the Opposition INDIA bloc, including Rahul Gandhi, Gaurav Gogoi, Manish Tewari (Congress), Akhilesh Yadav (SP), Supriya Sule (NCP), and Abhishek Banerjee (TMC), will address the House.
-
The TDP will also participate, with MPs Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi allotted 30 minutes of floor time.
-
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who returned from a two-nation visit last week, is expected to make a statement, though official confirmation is awaited.
Before the session begins, Opposition floor leaders will convene at 10 AM to finalize their strategy for the second week of the Monsoon Session.
Rijiju urged Opposition parties “not to stall the House,” referring to frequent adjournments in the first week. “It’s a loss for the country if Parliament doesn’t function,” he stated. Leaders from the NDA who were part of multi-party delegations on Operation Sindoor are also likely to contribute to the debate.
