In a significant boost for local fish farmers and consumers in the Paradip assembly constituency, Odisha’s Minister for Industries, Skill Development, and Technical Education, who is also the Paradip MLA, Sampad Chandra Swain, has proposed the establishment of a state-of-the-art hygienic fish market.
Swain has urged Fisheries and Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik to intervene promptly and allocate necessary funds for the project.
Nestled along the Bay of Bengal coastline and dotted with numerous rivers, Paradip is a hub for abundant marine fish resources. A substantial portion of the local population relies on fishing and related businesses for their livelihood, while fish remains a staple in the daily diets of residents. However, the existing fish markets in Paradip are in a deplorable condition, plagued by poor hygiene, inadequate infrastructure, and a lack of proper preservation facilities. This has led to a decline in fish quality, creating challenges for both vendors and buyers.
To address these issues, Minister Swain’s proposal envisions a modern fish market equipped with advanced cleaning systems, ice-based preservation units, robust infrastructure, and cold storage facilities. The initiative aims to minimise environmental pollution risks while ensuring the availability of fresh, high-quality fish that meets top safety standards. If implemented, this project could transform the local fish trade, benefiting not only business owners with improved operations but also consumers through access to healthier and superior products.
Local residents have long demanded such an upgrade, and Swain has formally written to Minister Mallik, emphasising the need for immediate action to bring this vision to life.
