A tragic accident unfolded in the Bayapada Ghat region under Nakamamudi Panchayat of Korukonda block, Malkangiri district, where a passenger van lost control and fell into the gorge.
The vehicle, reportedly en route from Amlibeda to Kudumulugumma’s weekly market, was carrying over 25 passengers when it veered off the narrow, hilly road.
Initial reports confirm that more than 15 passengers sustained serious injuries. The Kudumulugumma Fire Services team swiftly reached the site and began rescue operations, pulling out the injured from the mangled vehicle. However, sources indicate that several passengers may still be trapped inside the van.
The cause of the mishap is believed to be a loss of balance while navigating the steep terrain. Local authorities are coordinating with emergency services to ensure all victims receive timely medical attention.
This incident has once again raised concerns over road safety in hilly regions and the urgent need for infrastructure upgrades in remote tribal belts.
