Leaders of several Opposition parties, including Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, have written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding an immediate discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar.
The letter, signed by senior INDIA bloc leaders such as Gaurav Gogoi (Congress), TR Baalu (DMK), Supriya Sule (NCP-SP), N K Premachandran (RSP), Lalji Verma (SP), Kakoli Ghose Dastidar (TMC), Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena-UBT) and Abhay Kumar (RJD), expressed “deep concern” over the timing of the voter list revision, just months before Bihar’s assembly elections.
“This is unprecedented. The Election Commission has indicated similar exercises will soon be undertaken across the country. Given the apprehensions over transparency, timing and intent, the matter requires urgent attention,” the MPs wrote.
The Opposition has been raising the issue since the start of the monsoon session, claiming the EC’s move could “disenfranchise voters” ahead of the polls. While the government has said it is open to discussions, no date has been set.
The MPs urged Birla to schedule a special Lok Sabha discussion to seek clarity and ensure transparency in the process.
