Modern infrastructure is essential for better equipping students in various ITIs and engineering colleges across the state. To address this need, the Orissa School of Mining Engineering (OSME) laboratories in the tribal-dominated Keonjhar district are being upgraded with financial support from the Odisha Mineral Bearing Areas Development Corporation (OMBADC).
Established in 1956 in the mineral-rich Keonjhar district, OSME provides specialized training in Mining Engineering to local students and youth. Operating under the Skill Development and Technical Education Department, Government of Odisha, this technical education facility was the first in Eastern India to offer a diploma program in Mining Engineering. The institution offers training programs in eight advanced subjects, including Mining Engineering.
Thanks to OMBADC’s financial assistance, modernization efforts have been made in the areas of Mining Engineering, Drill Engineering, Mine Surveying, Metallurgy, and IT laboratories. Additionally, AutoCAD and MAT laboratories, as well as a Mining Museum, have been established. Essential equipment, such as computers and various types of machinery, has also been provided for the Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering departments.
“Under the Skilled in Odisha program of the state government, various measures are being implemented to nurture world-class skills among the youth. As part of this initiative, the infrastructure of technical educational institutions like OSME has been strengthened. With the support of OMBADC, this educational institution has transformed significantly. As students hone their skills, they are securing jobs in various industrial organizations,” said Er. Krushna Chandra Rout, Principal of OSME.
Moreover, the library at OSME has been renovated, and a variety of textbooks have been made available for students. With access to computers and the internet, students can learn the latest skills and expertise employed by leading companies both in India and abroad.
At both the national and international levels, there is a growing demand for skilled human resources in modern industrial institutions. To meet this demand, OSME is enhancing the skills of its students to align with global standards. With OMBADC’s support, various laboratories at the institution have been modernized, and new equipment has been provided. As a result, students can benefit from hands-on practice in addition to theoretical knowledge.
In addition to technical knowledge, physical fitness is also important for students. To support this, OSME has developed a modern gym and upgraded playground facilities where students can participate in various outdoor games and sports. Furthermore, arrangements for clean drinking water and sanitation have been made to ensure the well-being of students.
Thanks to the support from OMBADC, these modern facilities at OSME have contributed to the development of a young skilled workforce from the tribal-dominated Keonjhar district. After completing their training, students are finding employment opportunities in various mines and industrial organizations.
