The Indian Coast Guard has initiated ‘Operation Olivia’ in Paradip, Odisha, in a significant move to safeguard the vulnerable olive ridley turtles during their critical nesting period.
The operation employs drones, Coast Guard vessels, and Dornier aircraft for constant surveillance of the waters. Fast patrol vessels and interceptor crafts are also deployed for round-the-clock monitoring to ensure the safety of these endangered species.
To combat illegal trawling, the operation enforces strict bans under the Orissa Marine Fisheries Act. Fishing boats are required to install ‘Turtle Excluder Devices’ (TEDs) to prevent turtle deaths, ensuring that the turtles can nest safely.
This collaborative effort involves the State Fisheries and Forest Departments. The operation focuses on educating local fishing communities and strengthening patrols around restricted fishing zones.
Operation Olivia highlights the commitment of the Indian Coast Guard and local authorities to protect the olive ridley turtles and preserve marine life.
