The rare black tiger of Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve has earned a coveted spot on the cover of National Geographic’s October 2025 edition, bringing global attention to the state’s rich biodiversity.

Titled “The Tigers Who Changed Their Stripes,” the feature story highlights the elusive black tiger and the Odisha government’s efforts in tiger conservation and relocation, spearheaded by the Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Department.

Renowned National Geographic Explorer and photographer Prasenjeet Yadav spent extensive time in the dense forests of Similipal, meticulously documenting the movements of these rare tigers. His captivating cover image, showcasing a black tiger gazing intently from a rocky perch amidst Similipal’s lush greenery, has added a visual masterpiece to the compelling narrative. Yadav expressed gratitude to the Odisha government and the Forest Department for their unwavering support, noting that the serene beauty of Similipal, its simple yet warm local communities, and the rare black tiger left him awestruck.

The feature is expected to reach millions of readers worldwide, spotlighting Odisha’s natural treasures and its unique distinction as the only known habitat of the black tiger, a melanistic variant of the Royal Bengal Tiger. Forest, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singhkhuntia emphasised the significance of this achievement, stating, “Odisha is the only place in the world where black tigers roam, and their story on National Geographic’s cover is a matter of immense pride for us.”

This global recognition is set to elevate Odisha’s tourism, particularly for Similipal Tiger Reserve, which is poised to attract wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and conservationists from across the globe. The Odisha government’s proactive measures to protect its rich wildlife, biodiversity, and natural heritage are now gaining international acclaim. Minister Singhkhuntia expressed optimism, saying, “This feature will open new horizons for Odisha tourism and Similipal, showcasing our commitment to preserving nature for future generations.”

The National Geographic cover not only celebrates the rare black tiger but also underscores Odisha’s role as a leader in wildlife conservation, inviting the world to explore its untamed beauty.
