The Odisha government has announced a major urban mobility initiative for Bhubaneswar, including the development of a fully underground metro rail system and new ring roads, aiming to tackle rising traffic congestion and support the city’s rapid growth.

Odisha Works Department Minister Prithviraj Harichandan confirmed on Sunday that the underground metro will connect Patia to the new CRP Road and is slated for completion by the end of 2025. The project is expected to ease transportation bottlenecks in key urban corridors.

“To make the growth of Bhubaneswar more systematic and simultaneous, we have planned an inner ring road and outer ring road,” said Minister Harichandan. The outer ring road will pass through Khordha, Jatni, and Trisulia, and a separate Capital Region Ring Road is also on the agenda. These road projects are expected to be completed by 2027.

In addition, the state has approved a road expansion project from Acharya Vihar to Patia, aimed at improving urban accessibility and reducing commute times.

These infrastructure upgrades reflect the state’s strategic vision for modernising Bhubaneswar’s transportation network amid increasing urbanisation pressures.
