The Odisha government has announced that all diesel-run ‘Ama Bus’ services will be gradually phased out and replaced with electric buses (EVs).
The move, part of the state’s push towards sustainable and eco-friendly public transport, was confirmed by Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Wednesday.
Minister Mahapatra said the government has taken a policy decision to scrap diesel buses in a phased manner. Once the transition is complete, only electric buses will operate under the Ama Bus service across Odisha. The initiative aims to reduce pollution, cut fuel costs, and promote clean mobility in both urban and semi-urban areas.
To support the EV fleet, the government is strengthening charging infrastructure and maintenance facilities. In a significant step towards inclusivity, Mahapatra announced that women drivers will be entrusted with operating the Ama Buses. In the first phase, 20 women will be sent to Pune for specialised heavy vehicle training. After completing the program, they will be deployed to operate dedicated bus services.
The minister also revealed plans to introduce special buses exclusively for women passengers, enhancing safety and confidence among female commuters. The final decision on this proposal will be taken after a review by Chief Minister Mohan Majhi.
