Odisha is set to operate around 1,000 electric buses across the state, Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra announced today.

The initiative aims to reduce vehicular pollution and promote eco-friendly commuting options.

Currently, 400 e-buses are in service, with 200 more being added soon. An additional 400 buses will be provided under a central government scheme introduced by the Prime Minister.

In the initial rollout, 25 electric buses will be introduced in Sambalpur, with subsequent phased deployments planned for Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Berhampur, and Angul. These services will be managed by Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) under its “Aam Bus” initiative, which focuses on delivering safe, affordable, and eco-friendly public transportation.

Odisha has already achieved a notable milestone by ranking 5th nationally in electric bus operations, marking a major step forward in sustainable mobility. The state continues to benefit from central government schemes like PM-E Bus Sewa and PM-E Drive, which have collectively enabled the deployment of 14,329 e-buses across India.

“To protect the environment, it is necessary to introduce more e-buses across the state. With the upcoming additions, Odisha will have a fleet of 1,000 e-buses,” Mohapatra stated.

This expansion marks a major milestone in Odisha’s green infrastructure development, aligning with national goals for cleaner cities and reduced carbon emissions. The move is expected to improve public transport accessibility while contributing to climate resilience.
