Odisha to Face Widespread Thunderstorms, Heavy Rainfall & Gusty Winds from May 24–30, IMD Issues Warnings

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a week-long alert for Odisha, forecasting heavy rainfall, thunderstorms with lightning, and gusty surface winds across several districts from May 24 to May 30, 2025.


A cyclonic circulation is currently located over north coastal Odisha and its neighboring regions at an altitude of 3.1 km above mean sea level.

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the west-central and adjoining North Bay of Bengal around May 27, which may further intensify.

Significant cooling has been observed across many districts:

    • A sharp fall of around 5°C in parts of South Interior Odisha.

    • Appreciable drop of 2–3°C in parts of South Odisha.

    • In contrast, South Coastal Odisha recorded a rise of about 3°C.

    • Interior Odisha saw temperatures markedly below normal by 5–9°C.

The highest recorded temperature yesterday was 37.8°C in Boudh.

Major Rainfall Reports (in cm):

  • Patrapur (Ganjam) – 12

  • Tensa (Sundargarh) – 9

  • Sankheimundi (Ganjam) – 8

  • Bhuban (Dhenkanal) – 7

  • Others including Kotagarh, Karanjia, Kamakhyanagar, and Digapahandi also recorded 4–6 cm.

Warnings (May 24 – May 30, 2025):

Day 1: May 24

  • Orange Warning (Be Prepared):
    Heavy rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusts of 40–50 km/h likely in:
    Mayurbhanj, Keonjhargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kandhamal.

  • Yellow Warning (Be Aware):
    Thunderstorms with 30–40 km/h winds likely in:
    Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Cuttack, Nawarangapur, Kalahandi, Sonepur, Boudh, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Bargarh, Balangir, Nuapada.

Day 2: May 25

  • Yellow Warning:

    • Thunderstorms with 30–40 km/h winds and heavy rain in:
      Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhargarh.

    • Thunderstorms in:
      Balasore, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Kandhamal, Malkangiri.

Day 3: May 26

  • Yellow Warning:
    Thunderstorms with lightning and 30–40 km/h gusts across 18+ districts, including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Cuttack, Jajpur, Koraput, and more.

Day 4: May 27

  • Yellow Warning:

    • Heavy rain with 40–50 km/h winds in:
      Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri.

    • Thunderstorms with same wind speed likely in:
      Mayurbhanj, Keonjhargarh, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Kalahandi, Nawarangapur, Kandhamal.

Day 5–7: May 28–30

  • Yellow Warnings continue each day:

    • Same conditions (thunderstorms, lightning, 40–50 km/h gusts, and heavy rainfall) expected in districts across coastal, interior, and southern Odisha, including Nuapada, Kandhamal, Nawarangapur, Kalahandi, Keonjhargarh, Ganjam, and others.

No significant change in maximum day temperatures is expected for the next 6–7 days.

Residents are urged to:

  • Stay indoors during thunderstorms.

  • Avoid open fields, water bodies, and isolated trees during lightning.

  • Follow updates from the IMD and state authorities closely.

  • Farmers and fishermen should take necessary precautions.

Stay alert and prepared as Odisha faces an extended period of stormy and wet weather.
