A distressing incident at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore, Odisha, has prompted swift action from the state government. A female student, currently under critical care at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, attempted suicide, allegedly due to inaction by college authorities following her complaint against a faculty member.
Odisha’s Higher Education Minister, Suryabanshi Suraj, visited the student on Saturday evening to inquire about her condition and ensure she receives the best medical care. The student, who was initially admitted to the Trauma Care Unit, has been shifted to the Burns Unit for continued treatment.
Minister Suraj described the incident as “highly sensitive” and assured that all efforts are being made to provide top-quality medical care. “This is a serious matter, and we are committed to ensuring justice,” he stated. In response to the incident, the state government has taken decisive steps. The college’s Principal, Dillip Kumar Ghosh, and the accused faculty member, Samir Kumar Sahu, were suspended on Saturday.
Additionally, a high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter thoroughly. The committee, led by the Director of Higher Education and including a senior female officer (Joint Secretary) and a senior academic (Principal of another college), will probe the allegations and submit a report to guide further action.
The student had previously lodged a complaint against Sahu on July 2, alleging misconduct. However, the college authorities reportedly failed to act, which may have led to the student’s drastic step. The accused faculty member has been arrested and presented in court, with police investigations ongoing.
Minister Suraj emphasised that the committee will also examine why no action was taken earlier despite the student’s complaint, ensuring accountability at all levels.
The Higher Education Department has issued a suspension order citing preliminary findings that Sahu’s actions warranted immediate action, while Principal Ghosh was suspended for failing to address the complaint adequately. The minister has also consulted with the Chief Minister to ensure swift medical and administrative responses.
This incident has raised serious concerns about student safety and institutional accountability in Odisha’s educational institutions. The government’s prompt response, including suspensions and a high-level inquiry, signals a commitment to addressing such issues decisively.
The committee’s findings are expected to shed light on the circumstances leading to this tragic event and guide future preventive measures.
