Odisha, renowned for its rich biodiversity and scenic landscapes, has witnessed a notable surge in its cetacean population for the 2024-25 season.
The recent dolphin census reveals a thriving community of these majestic marine mammals across various wildlife divisions in the state.
The census documented a total of 710 dolphins across Odisha. The Irrawaddy Dolphin, with a count of 188, and the Humpback Dolphin, with 498 individuals, emerged as the most populous species. The Mangrove Wildlife Division in Rajnagar was a notable hotspot, boasting the highest number of dolphins, with 505 individuals. Chilika Wildlife Division also played a significant role, housing 174 dolphins, predominantly Irrawaddy Dolphins.
Environmentalists and wildlife enthusiasts are elated with the findings. “The increase in dolphin population is a positive indicator of the health of our marine ecosystems. It reflects the success of our conservation efforts,” said Dr. Anjana Patel, a renowned marine biologist.
While the census results are promising, experts emphasize the need for continuous efforts to protect these species and their habitats. The state government is urged to implement stricter regulations and enhance conservation programs to ensure the sustained growth of the dolphin population.
As Odisha celebrates this environmental milestone, residents and tourists alike are encouraged to visit these wildlife divisions to witness the splendor of these fascinating creatures in their natural habitats.
