In a significant step towards modernising crime investigation under the new Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Odisha State Police Headquarters inaugurated a dedicated training camp for Crime Scene Investigation Officers today.
The event, held at the Urban Police and Traffic Training Institute (UPTTI) in Laxmisagar, Bhubaneswar, was jointly organised by the Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA) and the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL).
The camp was formally opened by Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, who served as the chief guest. In his address, DGP Khurania highlighted the key provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, emphasising the integration of advanced scientific techniques and audio/video recording during investigations to expedite the conviction process. “The new laws mandate the use of cutting-edge forensic tools to ensure swift justice,” he stated.
As part of the initiative, DGP Khurania directed that every police station in the state appoint at least two dedicated Crime Scene Officers. These positions will be filled by qualified constables and home guards, who will undergo a comprehensive six-week training program covering the new Indian criminal laws, scientific methodologies, and their specific roles at crime scenes.
The inaugural batch includes 74 trainees from various districts—60 constables and 14 home guards. Experienced forensic experts and senior police officers will lead the sessions, focusing on practical and theoretical aspects such as securing crime scenes, meticulous evidence collection, and forensic analysis. Trainees will gain expertise in protecting sites, conducting thorough inspections, and gathering crucial evidence to strengthen cases.
DGP Khurania expressed optimism that these officers will play a pivotal role in convicting offenders in the coming days. “This training will enhance their proficiency in forensic techniques and digital evidence collection, making them more efficient and responsive,” he added.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including SFSL Director Dr Santosh Bala, IGP (Training) at BPSPA Anup Sahu, and UPTTI Head Prafulla Kumar Singh.
This program aligns with broader efforts to professionalise policing in Odisha, ensuring that investigations are scientifically robust and aligned with contemporary legal frameworks.
