Odisha observed the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies with a vibrant cycle rally in Bhubaneswar, sending a strong message on the urgent need to fight air pollution.
Themed “Racing For Air,” the event highlighted the deep link between clean air, human health, and sustainable urban living.
The rally, organized by the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), drew participation from over 200 cyclists, who rode from Forest Park to OSPCB’s state headquarters in Nilakantha Nagar. Participants carried banners and chanted slogans, urging people to join the mission for cleaner air.
The event was flagged off by Shri Satyabrata Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary (ACS), Home, Forest, Environment, and Climate Change, who also joined the rally.
“The growing public interest in improving air quality is encouraging. The State Government is committed to tackling air pollution with concrete steps through the Department of Forest, Environment, and Climate Change,”
– Shri Satyabrata Sahu, ACS.
Global Context
The theme “Racing For Air” is part of a worldwide campaign marking the Sixth International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, initiated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2019. First observed in 2020, the day serves to raise awareness and accelerate solutions for clean air, addressing air pollution—a leading health risk responsible for an estimated 8.1 million premature deaths annually.
Odisha’s Clean Air Push
The rally also showcased Odisha’s broader commitment to tackling air pollution. Alongside the National Clean Air Program (NCAP), the state launched its own State Clean Air Program (SCAP) on June 5, 2025.
-
Target: 40% reduction in PM10 and PM2.5 levels over 5 years
-
Coverage: 12 urban areas not included in NCAP, including industrial and mining hubs
-
Budget: Rs 150 crore over five years
These initiatives aim to improve air quality, safeguard public health, and build sustainable cities.
With enthusiastic citizen participation and policy-level action, Odisha’s “Racing For Air” campaign reflects the state’s commitment to cleaner skies and healthier communities.
