Bhubaneswar: The State Transport Authority (STA) Odisha has mandated that all educational institutions adhere to fire safety regulations to ensure the safety of students.
This directive, issued on Sunday, requires school buses to install a Fire Detection Alarm System (FDAS), Fire Detection and Suppression System (FDSS), and Fire Alarm Protection System (FAPS), as per Section 125C of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989.
These systems are essential for preventing and managing fire incidents on school buses, and ensuring student safety during transit. Compliance with AIS 135 under Rule 125C of the Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1989, is compulsory for all school buses.
Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur has ordered Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) to strictly enforce these regulations. The STA is expanding enforcement measures, with Zonal Deputy Transport Commissioners and RTOs conducting regular inspections of school buses. Legal action will be taken against any school bus found in violation.
Motor vehicle inspectors are tasked with ensuring regional compliance and revoking the fitness certificates of buses that do not meet the standards.
The Transport Commissioner has emphasised that the safety of young students is paramount, with a zero-tolerance approach to any negligence in the fire safety protocols of school buses.
