Odisha Governor Stresses Proper Nutrition, Care and Safety for Every Newborn in the State

Odisha Governor Dr. Raghubar Hari Babu Kambhampati emphasized the importance of providing proper nutrition, care, and safety to every newborn, regardless of background or circumstances.

He made the remarks while inaugurating the 15th National Conference of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Chapter and the 11th National Conference of the Human Milk Bank Association of India (HMB) held in Bhubaneswar on Sunday.

In his address, the Governor highlighted this year’s conference theme, “Celebrating the Legacy of Tomorrow: Embracing Sustainable Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) and Breastfeeding Practices.”

He said the theme carries a powerful message that the health, intellect, and vitality of a nation are deeply rooted in the nourishment and care provided to its future citizens.

Dr. Kambhampati underlined that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life—from conception to the second birthday—represent the most critical period for physical growth, brain development, and lifelong well-being.

“When we invest in the nutrition of infants and young children, we are not just addressing a medical issue but shaping the destiny of our society. Every drop of mother’s milk is not just nutrition—it is love, immunity, and emotional connection that no science can replicate,” he said.

The Governor acknowledged India’s significant progress in reducing neonatal and infant mortality rates, while noting that challenges such as malnutrition, lack of awareness, and social barriers still hinder optimal feeding practices. He stated that solutions lie not only in healthcare interventions but also in education, empowerment, and empathy within communities.

Dr. Kambhampati praised the role of healthcare professionals as changemakers, saying their guidance can build confidence among mothers and families to make breastfeeding and balanced nutrition a universal practice.

He also lauded mothers who selflessly donate breast milk to nourish other infants, calling their act “a true reflection of compassion and shared motherhood deserving of society’s deepest respect.”

Highlighting Odisha’s commitment to collective welfare, the Governor said the state has achieved commendable progress in maternal and child health through initiatives under the National Health Mission, Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres, and community outreach programs. He urged everyone to renew their collective commitment toward child welfare and nutrition.

The Governor also congratulated the organizers of the conference for their dedication to promoting infant health and nutrition. The event saw addresses by Dr. Kanya Mukhopadhyay, Secretary of HMB, and Dr. Joy Singh, Secretary of IYCF. Dr. Brajakishore Behera, Chairperson of the Scientific Committee, delivered the welcome address, while Dr. Pratik De, Co-Organizing Secretary, proposed the vote of thanks. National office-bearers of both IYCF and HMB were felicitated during the occasion.
