A tragic incident unfolded in Maharashtra as Shreya Narendra Pati (20), an Odia student pursuing LLB in Mumbai, was found dead in a deep gorge in Lonavala on Tuesday.

Shreya had gone trekking in the Lonavala–Khandala region on January 31. She informed her family about her plan, but failed to return home by evening. Her phone was switched off, raising an alarm. A local shopkeeper later discovered her bag with identity documents, which led to her family alerting the police.

Police launched a massive search operation with drones and a dog squad, covering difficult hilly terrain for nearly 36 hours. Her body was eventually recovered from a gorge estimated to be around 400 feet deep.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances of her death. Police are examining whether Shreya went trekking alone or was accompanied by someone. The case has raised serious concerns about safety in the popular trekking region.
