Ameen Sayani, a legendary host who became a household name with his radio programme Geetmala, has passed away at the age of 9. Reportedly, he suffered a cardiac arrest on Tuesday. Ameen had been dealing with high blood pressure and other age-related ailments for some time.
He was born in Mumbai in 1932 and started his career as an English broadcaster before transitioning to Hindi after India’s independence. Ameen Sayani created the groundbreaking show ‘Geetmala’ in December 1952, which featured chart-topping hits and became a cultural phenomenon in South Asia. He produced a record number of 54,000 radio programmes and lent his voice to over 19,000 advertisements and jingles.
