Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has expressed deep sorrow over recent group clashes in Cuttack, urging citizens to maintain peace and brotherhood in the historic city.
In a strong statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Majhi emphasised the need to preserve the city’s thousand-year-old legacy. He also vowed strict action against those disrupting public order.
The tensions, described as communal in nature by authorities, have led to violent incidents in various parts of Cuttack over the past few days. The CMO highlighted that anti-social elements have been instigating disturbances. This has affected daily life and created an atmosphere of fear among residents. “Cuttack is a symbol of brotherhood and harmony,” Majhi stated. “However, certain troublemakers have been attempting to shatter this peace. The government is closely monitoring them. Firm legal action will be taken against all violators.”
To restore calm, CM Majhi directed DGP YB Khurania to camp in Cuttack and maintain vigilant oversight on law and order.
24-Hour Social Media Ban in Cuttack
In a related development, the Odisha Home Department has imposed a 24-hour suspension of internet and social media services in key areas of Cuttack. The notification, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Satyabrata Sahu, cites concerns over the misuse of platforms. Platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and others are spreading false, provocative, and inflammatory messages. These messages could fuel communal violence.
The suspension affects mobile internet and data services from all providers, broadband, and dial-up systems across the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) area. It also impacts the Cuttack Development Authority (CDA) area and the 42 Mauza region. It came into effect at 7:00 PM on October 5 and will last until 7:00 PM on October 6. Officials noted that such measures are necessary to curb the rapid dissemination of misinformation. This misinformation threatens public safety and communal harmony.
Cuttack, known for its rich cultural heritage, including the famous Durga Puja celebrations, has historically been a model of inter-community coexistence. These incidents are particularly alarming.
The CMO reiterated its call for unity: “Let us all work together to elevate the city’s heritage and keep its glory intact.” Authorities have assured that essential services, including emergency communications, will remain unaffected. The situation is being monitored round-the-clock.
