Vehicular traffic across major National Highways in Odisha came to a grinding halt on Thursday as the Congress party, joined by six other political outfits, observed a statewide bandh to protest the tragic death of a 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan College, Balasore.
The deceased, a college student, had earlier attempted self-immolation and later succumbed to his injuries, sparking widespread public anger and demands for justice. The incident, which has shocked the state, prompted opposition parties to unite in protest, demanding accountability from the state government.
The 12-hour bandh disrupted normal life in many districts, particularly affecting Balasore, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Berhampur, where highway blockades and demonstrations were reported. Protesters stopped vehicular movement, held placards, and raised slogans demanding immediate action and an impartial investigation into the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
Security forces were deployed at key junctions and along sensitive routes to prevent untoward incidents. Public transport services were largely suspended, and several schools and commercial establishments remained closed in solidarity or as a precaution.
Congress leaders alleged administrative apathy and negligence in the handling of the case and vowed to continue their agitation until justice is delivered.
